Two Friends and Their Lessons: The Story of Kichu and Choru

Long ago, there was a village in a beautiful green valley. A clean and deep river flowed near that village. All the people of the village would take water from that river, catch fish, and spend relaxing moments sitting on the banks of the river.

There lived two close friends in the village—Kichu and Choru. Both of them did everything together since childhood. They were very fond of fishing. One day, Kichu said,

“Choru, I feel like catching a big fish today. Let’s go to the river bank.”

Choru immediately agreed. Both of them set out towards the river with their fishing net and bucket. On the way, they met their third friend, Monu. Monu was very intelligent and a nature lover. He looked at both of them and said,

“Kichu, Choru, you are going to catch fish, but remember one thing. Fishes cannot live without water. If you keep them on land, they will die. If you have to catch them, then keep them in water and take them with you.”

Kichu laughed and said,

“Hey Monu, you always come to give advice. We know how to handle fish. Go, do your work.”

Choru also ignored Monu's words and both of them moved towards the river.

The joy of fishing

After reaching the river bank, both of them threw their net in the water. After waiting for some time, a big fish got caught in Kichu's net. Kichu jumped with joy.

“Look Choru, how big my fish is! Perhaps this will be the biggest fish of today.”

Choru also started catching his fish. After some time, a big fish got caught in his net too. He shouted,

“Hey Kichu, my fish is bigger than yours! I have caught the biggest catch today.”

Now both of them started arguing.

“My fish is bigger!”

“No, my fish is bigger!”

Both of them put their fish on the ground and started comparing them. The fish started having trouble breathing, but Kichu and Choru were not worried about this.

Monu's warning and ignoring it

Monu also reached the river bank. He saw that Kichu and Choru were arguing after keeping their fish on the ground. He immediately went to them and said,

“Hey fools, keep the fish in water. They will not be able to breathe and will die. Put them in water quickly!”

But Kichu and Choru ignored his words again. Kichu said sarcastically,

“Monu, we know everything. Why are you interrupting? Look, how big my fish is!”

Fishes jump and return empty handed

As Kichu and Choru were busy arguing, suddenly the fishes made a big leap with their remaining strength and went back into the river. Both were shocked to see this.

“Oh! My fish is gone!” Kichu shouted.

“Me too!” Choru said in a regretful voice.

Now both were empty handed. They could not understand what to do.

Monu said laughingly,

“See, I had already told you to keep the fishes in the water. But you did not listen to me. Now see, you both have nothing left. You were just arguing.”

Kichu and Choru realized their mistake. They bowed their heads and apologized to Monu.

“Monu, please forgive us. We have made a big mistake. We will definitely be careful next time.”

Lesson and Promise

Monu explained to them,

“In life, we should always listen to the advice of others, especially when it is right. Also, we should be kind to animals and nature. These fishes also have a right to live like us. Don’t hurt them.”

Kichu and Choru promised that they would never harm the fishes again and would always follow Monu’s advice.
